A sports weekend to remember

Well, the draft is over, much to my wife's delight. Day 2 is always less interesting, but it is probably more important than Day 1. You could field an All-Pro team with Day 2 picks, starting with some QB named Brady. Hmmm, that may make a good future story....

Did anyone see the end of the NASCAR race? WOW! It's been a while since we've had an ending like that! I'm glad that all of the fans are alright (7 were injured but none serious), and that Carl Edwards is alright.

Jacoby Ellsbury's straight steal of home was amazing. A Boston player stealing home? What's next, a good Browns team?

Speaking of that city up north, gratz to The Cavs! This is finally gonna be a title year in Cleveland!

Wow! The Browns never cease to amaze!

More Day 1 observations:

• The Rams got their next Pace, the Jets got their next Namath. and the Browns got their next....Jeff Faine? Seriously? Is this the most inept franchise in sports? Lets trade the rights to a franchise QB for the chance to pick a center?
• A Tale of 2 picks: I grade the Bungles an F on Round 1 and an A++ on Round 2. Not disputing Andre Smith's talent. But do they really need more "character issue" guys? Rey Maualuga, however, will end up being a steal in round 2.
• Speaking of steals, the Cards got the best value in the draft. 2 5 teams or so will be gnashing their teeth when he becomes a reasonable facsimle of Eddie George.
• Finally the Steelers draft Ziggy Hood. I confess that I know nothing about him, but he has far and away the coolest name in the draft. Oh, he will also probably make 10 Pro Bowls. Have you looked at Pittsburghs draft record in recent years? More on this later....

OK Matthew Stafford could have combed his hair on the biggest day of his life. But I'm no style consultant. That being said......

Pick One-Matthew Stafford-Lions: Stafford will be a solid NFL QB. Think Eli Manning. or Archie Manning, for that matter. But definitely not Peyton Manning. I woulda went Sanchez (more on him later). Sidenote: In some parallel universe, I am married to Erin Andrews. Ahhhh...

Pick Two-Jason Smith-Rams: Well, they got another Orlando Pace. Not a bad thing. Not sexy, but a solid pick.

Pick Three-Tyson Jackson-Chiefs: A bit of a surprise. I would have went Curry. Tyson has a nice speed/size combo. But still a bit of a reach...

Pick Four-Aaron Curry-Seahawks: Great choice, best overall player in draft. THEY say you should not draft a LB too early. Well, in my mind, you could make an argument that the three best defensive players ever could be Butkus, LT, and Ray-Ray Lewis. So take that, THEY!

Pick Five-Mark Sanchez-Jets: Well the Browns blow it again. Hate to say I told you so... While Sanchez leads the Jets to 2 or 3 Super Bowl titles, the Browns will watch with that servicable player they pick later. Sanchez will be a star, and his personality is the perfect fit for New York. Joe Namath with more talent...

Draft Day 2009!

Gonna be blogging through first few picks today. Early observations:

Stafford is going first! I'm a prophet!

The Browns will screw up. They always do.

Sanchez will be a better NFL QB than Stafford.

Brian Orakpo is a beast.

Beanie Wells would be a perfect fit in Philly. But he will end up in New Orleans.
